Aerial Yoga

By Tonka Dobreva 08.21.2015 blog

It’s common knowledge that yoga is good exercise. The physical poses work out your whole body, and the meditation part is great for your mind. Usually yoga is practiced on the ground, using a mat and blocks. But now some yogis are taking their practice to the air in a new workout called aerial yoga.

In aerial yoga, nine foot long silk ribbons are hung from the ceiling like swings. The swings, also known as hammocks,  are used to support various poses in midair. It takes a lot of trust – there’s nothing between you and the ground! However, once you get comfortable in the hammock, it’s almost impossible to fall.

A few classes are needed before students can twirl and flip over, but those that stick with it say that it relieves stress and works out core muscles. Aerial yoga classes are quickly popping up all over the country, and you can check online to see if there’s a studio near you.

Could aerial yoga be the next big thing in fitness? Vote and let us know what you think in the comments!
