Vote: Is Bike Wheel Art the Next Big Thing?

By Abbey Tiderman 11.13.2016 blog

Here’s the good news: more and more Earth- and health-conscious Americans are turning to the bicycle in order to get here and there, to work and school. The bad news?  Bikes aren’t always the safest mode of transportation in our car-crazy culture. Bike lanes, helmets and awareness campaigns are helping to protect cyclists though, as are inventions like the Monkey Light.

Founded by MIT Media Lab scientist Dan Goldwater and manufactured in California, Monkey Light is a spoke-mounted bike light system that makes a cyclist visible from every direction. These lights don’t just promote safety either—they’re about 360 degrees of fun and personality too. Goldwater and his colleagues at Monkey Electricity collaborated with artists to create colorful light options that shine brightly when wheels are turning at night, displaying artistic scenes including lightening, stars and hearts.

As if inspiring more people to ride bikes safely wasn’t awesome enough, these lights are made with environmentally safe products that are lead free and Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) compliant.  And from the manufacturing process to products and packaging, the company has pledged to try and reduce materials and energy use. Not bad reasons to hop in the saddle and ride, eh?

Would you deck out your bike and light up the night? Vote and tell us what you think — you can even submit video comments to We will feature the results of the poll and some of your comments on the show!
