Car Vending Machine

By Abbey Tiderman 12.04.2015 blog

Ah, the vending machine—an invention that’s existed in one form or another for centuries. Sure, they occasionally spit wrinkled, rejected dollar bills back out at you, but they are convenient. In some countries they dispense full meals, clothes and toys, while in the U.S. they’re a school staple, supplying teachers and students alike with break-time basics like water, snacks, coffee and candy. A company out of Nashville, Tennessee, however, has recently raised the vending machine bar. Multiple stories high, in fact. That’s right. Carvana has created the world’s first coin operated car vending machine.

“Our new Vending Machine is a state-of-the-art, multi-story structure that delivers our customers’ cars by merely inserting a custom coin. Carvana’s mission is to create a better way to buy a car, and this new Vending Machine will be a one-of-a-kind experience that mirrors just how simple and easy we’ve made it to buy a car online,” said Ernie Garcia, founder and CEO of Carvana, in a company press release.

Here’s the deal. You spend some time in the comfort of your own home scoping out your car options on their website and getting potential trade-in and financing worked out. You make your selection and finalize the deal online—no stressful haggling sessions. Once the car’s ready for pick-up, you visit Carvana’s kiosk, get your custom coin, slip it in the slot and your shiny new car makes its way out of the 20-car vending tower and into your garage.

Having buyer’s remorse? No worries. You have seven days to return it.

I don’t feel like this will be the next big thing. My reasons for this are, it most likely will not be mass produced, it will not pay for itself, and it will be difficult for it to catch on. People enjoy picking out a car from a dealership, where there are many types of cars, and not just 15 cars to choose from. Yes, it is a novelty, but it is not the next big thing.
