Move over and make some space at the table kiddos! Mom, dad, and even grandma and grandpa are joining in on the coloring fun. It may have been a number of years since you spent time with the crayons, markers and colored pencils, but you may want to reconsider. Yep. Coloring books for grown ups is now a thing.

Scottish artist Johanna Bashford is one of the adult coloring book designers resonating with the coloring community and has helped propel the art to a global audience. When releasing her first book, Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book, she wasn’t sure how it would be received. Turns out, 5 million people couldn’t wait to spend time filling in its intricate pages.

Adult coloring enthusiasts have described the growing trend as hypnotic, and experts have even pointed to coloring’s stress relieving benefits. Spending time coloring (and unplugged from electronic devices) can not only help people unwind, but is also said to promote self awareness, mindfulness and wellness. It’s no wonder online coloring communities and face-to-face coloring clubs are all the rage these days. Will you sit down and try it anytime soon? Even Johanna Bashford says it’s ok to color outside the lines.

We’d like to hear from you! Send your ideas for the next big thing to nbt@channelone.com.

No! If you use coloring books then you most likely need a new hobby. They are for 2-8 year olds and take up too much of your time. There is nothing relaxing about them. Sorry but it is just the truth.
