If you’re a student, you don’t need anyone to tell you that you’re sleep deprived. But a new recommendation from the AAP (American Association of Pediatrics) may mean that schools will start adjusting their policies to help.

The group cites numerous studies that say middle and high school students aren’t getting enough rest, and the results aren’t just sleepy student — it’s a health and safety issue. Lack of sleep “has been linked with poor health, bad grades, car crashes and other problems,” they explained.

But school administrators in many districts say the start time for school isn’t based on the needs of students, but on budgets. In many places, start times are related to what time school buses can pick up students, and in most cases younger students get picked up second, and later than older students. What’s more, students, teachers and administrators agree that a later release time would leave less time for after-school activities and sports practices, which means students might get to bed later too.

We want to know what you think. Does school start too early for you to get enough sleep? Vote in the poll to weigh in. And if you’d like your response to be used on the show, please include your first name (and only your first name!), age and city and state.

I don’t think that school should start later because my parents work schedule makes me wake up at 5:30, get there at 6:30, and then school starts at 8:15

I don’t think we should start school later than 8:30 because people should have freedom after school, live a little! We need our time after school. The reason why kids aren’t getting enough sleep is because they choose to stay up till 2:00am. Kids have the option to go to bed early because they have school, yet they choose not to. kids make the decision so they have to pay the price. Parents shouldn’t have to change their schedules because their kids choose not to go to bed early! -Syd

School should start late then end at like 9 at night. I am in tenth grade and get up at 5:30.every morning and never have time to.do homework. Real quick a shout out to my world.history class and Mr. Burn who let’s us watch channel one every day.

I highly support the idea of starting school later. I am in the tenth grade and I get up at 5:45 to six in the morning. Has anyone else besides me thought of having night school since teenagers are up all night anyways. We could go to school in the night and have school practices, before school.

I agree with cutting the number of school hours in a day, and that many students are sleep deprived. I do not believe the number of hours in a day at school is the main culprit, though. I think the amount of work the average student receives is more to blame for sleep deprivation than how long the school day is. My idea of a solution would be less paper work and more hands on work. I speak as a student from Bethel Junior/High School (bethel.k12.oh.us) , hopefully representing my colleagues opinion, for students across the nations sake. Thank you for allowing me to voice my opinion.

Yes I think that they should start school at 9:00 because then you don’t have to get up a 6:00 to go to school and you would be able to get up at 7:30 and get a hour or a hour and a half extra to sleep and not be so tired to go to school.

I think school should start at 8:30 because it gives people enough time to eat breakfast. I wake up at 5:00 my bus comes at 6:30 A.M. NOT ENOUGH TIME!!!!!!!!!

I think school should start past 8:30 because we really need to get more sleep and if we get more sleep we will be more focused in class.

I think we should start school at 8:30 kids these days don’t get enough sleep an extra hour of sleep would help so many of us. I know people who only get a couple of hours of sleep sometimes. Do u think were gonna do our best when were all tired. No.

I think schools should start later because kids at my school always complain about how tired they are , sometimes though its there fault because they stayed up way too late.
