Staying fit is an important part of my life. It makes me feel good and I believe it also helps me stay healthy. I have been working out for about eight years. My workouts vary but usually include weights, biking, running, boxing, plyometric exercises, basketball, and yoga. I also was a personal trainer at a fitness club in Ohio and trained people at my college.
Over the last few years, I’ve noticed that supplements of all kinds are popping up at gyms all over the country. That because the industry has rapidly grown in the last twenty years. In 2012, it was a $32 billion dollar market, and it’s only expected to grow.
And when you include multivitamins, minerals and herbs, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) it turns out that 50% of all Americans are taking something to enhance something good or prevent something bad.
But because supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA in the same way drugs are, the manufacturers don’t have to prove that they actually work. The CDC says that the results of studies on all these dietary extras are inconclusive, though vitamin D and calcium have been proven to help prevent bone loss, and zinc might be able to help relieve cold symptoms (but so does chicken soup!).
