Love to write? Want to see your work published — and win some cash along the way? Then read on!

The national Spark a Story writing contest is calling in all young storytellers to submit their best stories!

Who can participate?

The contest is open to students in Grades 9, 10, 11 or 12, and those who either are enrolled in a public, parochial, private or charter school in the United States, or are being homeschooled.  All entries must have the signature of a school official or parent or guardian on their entry form.

Requirements, criteria and deadlines

You are able to make your short story submission through October 7th, 2016.  Entries will be judged on creativity, originality and overall quality of writing. Entries must be original works of fiction and should be no longer than 5,000 words. There is no minimum length requirement. Your stories should aim to inspire readers and pique their curiosity.

How can I submit my short story?

There are 3 easy ways to submit your short story:

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company
222 Berkeley Street
Boston, MA 02116

What will I win?

The top submissions will be published in a special anthology next year (from the publisher who brought you J.R.R. Tolkien’s tales of Middle-earth!). Winners will receive a free copy of the anthology and a cash prize of $100!

Winners will be notified privately before the end of 2016. A public announcement will be made in the first quarter of 2017.
