Thanks to new government laws and initiatives, schools across the country have been changing their menus to offer healthier meal options. However, not all students are happy with the offerings. Instead of feeling frustrated and going back to unhealthy eating habits, students can make a difference. Here we show you how, with a little effort, you can turn your school lunchroom into a place that promotes healthy and delicious meal options.
Before you can change your school lunch, you have to know what changes you’d like. Talk to your fellow students about what you think your school could be doing better, and do some research on other schools that have worked to implement new lunch standards.
If you have issues with your lunchroom, one way to see what can be done is to speak with administrators. Chances are, your school has someone who’s in charge of the lunch program, and speaking with them can help you get your concerns heard. Students at Mukwonago High School in Wisconsin worked with their food service supervisor to fill out cards about their lunch issues that they sent to the USDA along with parent letters.
If you want to change your school’s food options, you’re going to need some support. You’re probably not the only person who’s noticed that your lunchroom could use some sprucing up, and starting a petition can be a great way to meet other students, teachers and parents who share your view. You can start an online petition, or just print one out for friends to sign. Don’t be afraid to present your petition to administrators.
Lots of schools across the country are starting gardens with the help of their students. Not only is this a great lesson on how food goes from a seed to your plate, but it will also allow you to have fresh fruits and veggies in your lunchroom! Starting a school garden can also encourage other students to be more aware of nutrition.
Researchers at Cornell found that the set-up of a lunchroom can change the way students eat. Some of their suggestions include putting a salad bar in the middle of the lunchroom, and moving less healthy foods to the end of the line. One school in San Francisco made over their lunchroom by adding new tables for different activities, making food available for pickup, and putting a sandwich stand outside in the play yard. By doing so, way more kids ate lunch, and they made better choices.

hey channel one, I think my school really needs a lunchroom makeover, we really don’t get much but it still is unhealthy. Most of the time we get about 4 “big” chicken nuggets. We get gross stuff that looks…gross. And everyday it’s either chicken (rubber) or pizza(cardboard),The school is Troy Middle School district 30-c in Joliet Illinois
