When was the North Atlantic Treaty signed?
NATO was created after the fall of Nazi Germany and the end of World War II. The organization was meant to be a counterweight to the Soviet Union.
What does NATO stand for?
NATO is the organization that fulfills the goals of the North Atlantic Treaty.

Member countries of NATO agree to mutual defense in response to an attack on any one of the countries. The organizations goal is to promote stability and well-being in the North Atlantic area.

How many countries originally signed the North Atlantic Treaty?
Originally signed by 12 founding member countries, NATO has since expanded and now consists of 28 member countries from Europe and North America.
Where was NATO’s first military combat operation?
In 1994, NATO launched air strikes against Bosnian Serbs to force them to negotiate a peace settlement. NATO also deployed thousands of troops to enforce a cease fire.
Who can work for NATO?
Anybody who is a national of one of NATO’s member countries can apply to work for the organization.
Can new countries join NATO?
Any European country committed to NATO’s purpose can join, once it has proven it will benefit and be beneficial. Currently, a few former Soviet countries, including Ukraine and Georgia, are trying to become part of NATO.
Russia still has no part in NATO:
Although Russia is still not a NATO member country, it is part of the NATO-Russia Council, which was formed in 2002. The Council handles joint security and military issues, including fighting terrorism.
