Chess, billiards and bowling are all Olympic events.
The IOC recognizes chess, billiards and bowling as sports. All three have international organizations lobbying to be added to the Olympic program.
Olympic medals have been given out for tug-of-war.
Tug-of-war was once an Olympic event. Tug-of-war, considered a track and field event, was on the Olympic roster from 1900 to 1920. The last team to win the gold medal in tug-of-war was Great Britain in 1920.
Lifesaving will be an event at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The IOC recognizes lifesaving as a sport, but it’s not currently an official Olympic event. Competitions are held on lakes, in surf, on beaches and in swimming pools. Mannequins, obstacle courses and boats are used in some of the events.
Roller-skating is a medal event at the Olympic Games.

Olympic medals have been given out for ballroom dancing and bridge.
Competitive ballroom dancing, called DanceSport, and the card game bridge are both recognized by the IOC as sports. Supporters of both sports are lobbying to join the Olympic Games as events.
Athletes can win medals in table tennis — known by many as pingpong — at the Olympic Games.
Table tennis has been a medal event at the Olympics since the 1988 Games in Seoul, South Korea. Athletes can compete in men’s doubles, men’s singles, women’s doubles and women’s singles competition.
Golf was once a medal sport at the Olympics.
At the turn of the 20th century, golf was a medal event in the Olympic Games. Athletes could medal in golf at the 1900 games and again at the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis. Now they’ll be able to again, as the IOC included golf and rugby in the 2016 Rio games.
Surfing is an official event at the summer Olympics.
Surfing is recognized by the IOC, but it is not an Olympic sport. However, surfing has been an exhibition sport at past Olympic Games. Before becoming an Olympic medal event, a sport under consideration can be given a trial run as an exhibition sport. Medals are awarded in exhibition sports, though not the official Olympic gold, silver and bronze. Freestyle ski jumping and badminton are examples of medal events that were added to the Olympic roster this way.
Rugby was once a Summer Olympic sport.
Rugby, one of the earliest forms of football, was a medal sport at the Olympics four times in the early part of the 20th century. Rugby was held at the Olympics of 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924, and will be welcomed back to the games in Rio in 2016 after a recent vote by the IOC.
