Should Schools Remove Religious Holiday Names From Calendars?

By Tonka Dobreva 11.18.2014 interact

As you learned from our news show today, a Maryland school district recently voted to take out all religious holidays from the school calendar, renaming Christmas break to winter break and Easter break to spring break. The controversial decision has caused disapproval among parents and students of all religious faiths.

We want to know what you think — vote and tell us your opinion in the comments section below. The poll results and some of your comments will be featured on-air during our Thursday show!

NOOOO!!! I think because it has a meaning CHRISTMAS BREAK . Even if you are jewish or any other religion you can have your own opinion. But CHRISTMAS BREAK will live on.

  2. ProIsrael

I think we should change it winter and spring break. I’m Jewish so I don’t celebrate Christmas. Sometimes I think schools think about Jews and Muslims as second class citizens.

  3. Davida

No because if you have a problem with it make your own calnder!!

  4. Luke

“I do not think they should remove holidays from the school calender because for example the biggest religion in the world is Christianity so I think they should not remove it because its the biggest.”

I agree with Luke why would it be a problem

    • ProIsrael

Biggest doesn’t mean much. I’m Jewish and I hate how they call it Christmas break. There are many non-Christains you know.

Why change it? It never harmed non-Christians that Christmas Break was called that. It never harmed anyone that Easter break was called that. It just doesn’t make sense to me. No one cares if they are called a religious name. I think that the school board just wants to bully Muslims. All they did was ask for their children to be let out of school for one of their religious holidays. If non-Muslims get to get out of school for their religious holidays, then they should to. It’s not fair to change break names just because Muslims wanted to be recognized. It’s just not fair.

No schools should not remove religious holidays from the calendar. It is different from not allowing prayers in school. Although you did not have to participate in the prayer, many people wondered why their child had to feel left out. A school calendar is not even a daily occurrence. The student choose to look at a calendar, and either way students of any religion will be off school during “Christmas” break. It should be up to the students whether or not the name is changed.

In my own opinion they shouldn’t remove religious holidays from calendars. I think that because some people are very religious and it could be insulting for them. I wished America would be like they were in the past, under God and very religious in their own way.

I think that the simplest thing to do is remove the names.
Many people will get upset if their names are not included and it is hard to include everybody. However, I don’t think this is a big issue. Whatever you call the break; it’s still a way of saying school is canceled.

What does a name hurt? its just a word on a calendar. School Districts should be flexible for religions but not remove the names.

  10. Elise

I don’t think it would make a difference if they took down the religious holiday names from the school calendar. It doesn’t really affect anything, so I don’t see the point in taking them down.

Yeah. I mean what’s the point? It never hurt anybody who wasn’t Christian that Winter Break is called Christmas Break. I mean they probably just want to bully Muslims and make them feel like it’s THEIR fault by asking to have one of their holidays acknowledge and let their kids get out of school for it. Why change it? Just wondering government. Just wondering why you would do that.

You know what im 11 and ill be happy to get any days off so what if they change the name.

  12. Sam

I don’t think they should because taking those names away will upset many people and there religions.

  13. Kora 57

They shouldn’t remove the holiday names I think because I’m a Christian, and I like to know my holiday is on there. But adding or removing them is leading into a protest, just leave it as it is.

I think schools from all over the United States shouldn’t have to remove religious holidays from the calendar. There are a lot of different people that have different religions but there shouldn’t be a big deal about “kwanza” and other related holidays. Many people are part of different religions but they don’t make a big deal out of it.
