Rely on team workouts in the pre-season to get in shape.
Get conditioned first. If youre out of shape, its obvious, says Ray Rosas, coach of the Holy Family High School Gaels in Glendale, Calif. Run to get your legs in shape. Crunches and sit-ups help with lateral movement (sliding side-to-side) and push-ups give good upper-body strength for longer throws.
Do your hair nicely before tryouts to stand out and get noticed.
Put your game face on, not lip-gloss. Image is a lot, says Coach Rosas. Come show the coach youre ready to go! Were not here to make a fashion statement. Were here to play. That means cleats on, jewelry off and glove out.
The most important thing is a positive, relaxed attitude.
Its like a date, says Coach Rosas. Everybodys tense! So go out there, give it your best shot and dont hold back. Confidence lets your ability shine through– very key at tryouts.
Coaches automatically notice how you throw.
How you throw automatically gets attention– positively or negatively– from the coach, says Rosas. So dont throw sideways and snap your wrist on the release. Try to do it the same every time. Coaches can help with the technical aspects of one throw, but not if youre all over the place.
Your arms help you accelerate when you run.
Its your arms, not just your legs that help you go faster, says Coach Rosas, so dont run like a Barbie! Keep your head up and concentrate on fluid motion.
Keep your eyes on the pitcher when youre up to bat.
Keep your eyes on the ball, baby! If you track it all the way from the pitchers hand to the point of contact with your bat, youll make contact more consistently, which will score points with any coach.
Asking a coach to repeat instructions you dont understand will make a bad impression.
You should always ask if you dont understand something. Otherwise youre wasting the coachs time– and yours– especially when youre running drills. Coach Rosas points out that you wont get any better at something if youre doing it wrong.
If youre not the best player on the field, you can make up for it by hustling.
Coaches love someone who hustles, has a great attitude and is willing to learn. Thats the kind of person you can take to the next level, says Coach Rosas. Likewise, a lousy attitude can hold a good player back.
If you dont make the cut, that means the coach doesnt want to talk to you.
Dont walk away with your head down. Ask what you need to work on, says Coach Rosas. Theres not a coach in the world who doesnt like to be asked a question. If you follow what he or she says and really work on it, youll up your chances of making the team next year.
