Vote: Do You Think Hair Extensions Violate the Dress Code?

By Tonka Dobreva 05.17.2017 interact

Students from one Massachusetts school are facing detention — and are even suspended from prom– because of a hair accessory. Mystic Valley Charter School has a dress code that deems hair extensions a violation of the school dress code. According to school officials, “a dress code is to keep students on a level playing field.” That’s why the school bans hair extensions, “which are expensive and could serve as a differentiating factor between students from dissimilar socioeconomic backgrounds.”

The students affected by this policy, however, say it’s an unnecessary restriction.

We want to hear from you — vote whether you think hair extensions violate the dress code and tell us your thoughts in the comments section below. We will feature the results of the poll and some of your comments on the show.

I said yes. Now before anyone tries to rip me to shreds, let me explain from a Public School Students POV. I had a chunk of my long hair stuck in a zip-line at a camp that I attended years ago. The camp had to file out an incident report because of what happened because they knew that for one week they were responsible for me. Schools are responsible for us, and if we get injured under their watch, they could be held liable for what could happen. So if you have short hair and you get extensions in it, but you get injured because of those hair extensions, then the school can be held liable. Ultimately, I said yes because sometimes hair extensions can be safety hazards, and it is up to each school to set policies in place concerning hair extensions, just like it is up to the students to follow the dress code and teachers to enforce it. If the school asked the students to remove the hair extensions, but the students refused and gave a ton of attitude, then that may have warranted the situation that occurred. As for now, students must respect school dress code policy, and the school has to handle dress code violations in an appropriate manner.

I don’t think hair extensions are a violation of dress code because if they have to wear a uniform they can do whatever they want. You girls keep fighting!

This is the same with uniforms in high school or college.

Hair extensions do not mess with any one or hurt anything, it’s just for look just like makeup are you going to suspend a girl because she wears makeup.

NO, Hair extensions make people look better from their real hair and isn’t it like Hair abuse?

    • Edward

Hair abuse isn’t a real thing.

No! This is unfair I think people should be able to express their culture the way they feel is appropriate.
