Vote: Should Confederate Memorials Be Taken Down?

By Tonka Dobreva 04.26.2017 interact

New Orleans this week began the removal of Confederate monuments that were put up nearly 100 years ago. Confederate monuments have been a cause for controversy in several Southern states, and other cities in the region have voted to remove them as well. Opponents of the memorials say they are offensive artifacts honoring the region’s racist past.

But others say these monuments are part of history and should be preserved. They argue that the statues aren’t symbols to glorify a war, but to honor the men who fought.

We want to know what you think–should Confederate memorials be taken down? Vote and tell us your opinion in the comments section below. We will feature the results of the poll and some of your comments on the show.

Of course they shouldn’t! Me being an African American knows how it feels to be treated in such ways. We at least deserve the respect of these memorials being taken down. It is absurd that some people think this is good to keep up. The confederacy left our good natured country in the first place. Plus they lost!!! We were enslaved to keep their economy running, the least this god forsaken country could do is take those commemorative to evil statues down!

History and the fallen men should be respected

Indeed they should be taken down. The confederacy along with the enslavement African Americans and the Trail of Tears are like blood stains on a new white dress, it ruins the whole thing. The idea that the confederacy broke away from the United States to become it’s own country ( Foreigners) is should say enough, but if it doesn’t think about it like this: Would you like for a monument Adolf Hitler on lawn of you State Capitol? NO!! He was a menace to society and was responsible for the genocide of the Jewish people.

No, i do not believe the confederate statues should be torn down because they are apart of our history. We can’t deny it or try to run away from it. The best thing we can do is acknowledge those who risked their lives for what they believed in, no matter what it is.

we need these memories so that we can remember!

  4. Wesley Dale

No because they are memorials of important people of our past.

  5. Elizabeth

The memorials should not be taken down, they help remind us what are past was like, they can help us from here to the time the world comes to an end.

  6. Paul

Removing the monuments is a liberals way of attempting to rewrite history. We need to preserve our history, warts and all. Also, remember that those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.

I think the memorials should be taken down because they represent somthing that we don’t agree with any more. I think that they should put them in a museum, so people still know the history of the statues.

  8. Ainsley S.

I don’t think they should be taken down. They represent our history as America, and while it may not be a history we are proud of, it is still our history. The statues were built to honor the men who fought bravely, even if it was for the wrong reason.

No, the memorial should not be taken down because it is apart of our history. Right, wrong or indifferent it is apart of our history and we need to learn from the past to help the future.Trying to pretend it didn’t happen doesn’t make it go away.
