What’s in Your Food?

Natural food additives have been around for centuries. Did you know that our ancestors used salt to preserve meats and fish? They also used sugar to preserve fruit, pickled cucumbers in vinegar solution and of course enhanced the taste of food by adding herbs and spices. But today, chemical additives have become very popular because they allow food companies to mass-produce at a lower cost. Additives have also come under scrutiny because of health concerns.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are over 3,000 ingredients in its data base “Everything Added to Food in the United States.” Use the infographic below to learn more about the natural and artificial ingredients you may find in foods and what purpose they serve.

Now the FDA wants to know what YOU think — it is requesting that the public comments on the use of the term “natural” on food labeling. The administration wants to know how to define the term “natural” and how to appropriately use it on labels. You can give your feedback here.
